For the first of this month’s retailer profiles, Kathy Jensen visited Clare Johnston of Costcutter Tobermore, who is enjoying a considerable uplift in business following the recent extension and refurbishment of the store.
There has been a shop of some description on the site of Clare Johnston’s Costcutter in Tobermore for around 100 years, the original business having been founded by a Canadian whom the locals called Yankee Tommy. Clare’s father William bought the business about 25 years ago, when it was trading as a clothes shop. He converted it to a convenience store and ran it for several years before selling the business on and it has changed hands several times since.
Clare, of course, helped out in her father’s shop when she was at school, before going on to complete a degree in Spanish and Business Studies at Queen’s University, which included a year of study at Salamanca University. “I enjoyed my language skills (most of them now rather rusty!),” said Clare, “but I never really wanted to work in that field, always feeling drawn back to retail I just love the environment of shops and the constant meeting of people it involves.”
