The Ulster Pork and Bacon Forum presented the seventh National Sausage Competition Awards on Wednesday 29th October at the Hilton Hotel in Templepatrick.

The awards followed on from National Sausage Week promotions throughout participating retailer butchers in Northern Ireland and reinforced local pork as a winning combination with a quality assurance and welfare standards second to none. All participating butchers and retailers throughout the Province received ‘Local and Pork’ in-store merchandising, detailing the benefits of local pork, bacon, ham and sausage and the importance of this industry to the Northern Ireland economy. Consumers want to support the local industry and it is vital that retailers support this quality message as we move into the crucial Christmas period.

Commenting, Keith Smyton, Chief Executive of the Pork and Bacon Forum said that the industry had been encouraged by the efforts of the local supply chain who took part in the National Sausage Competition. “This year we had over two hundred and fifty entrants in the competition, the main objective of which was to find the Housewife’s Choice of Pork Sausage. Selected by a panel of housewives during the judging, this could be a traditional or a gourmet sausage, whichever it was the one the housewives all agreed tasted best. This year, the overall winner of the 2008 National Sausage Competition in Northern Ireland was Robert Gallagher of RJ Gallagher Butchers in Brookeborough, who was also the first prize winner in Co. Fermanagh.”
