Age-friendly Belfast invite to business breakfast -Belfast City Council

Local businesses have been urged to attend a breakfast event at the City Hall to look at how being more age-friendly may help boost their turnover and benefit Belfast and its citizens.

The breakfast event will take place in Belfast City Hall on Tuesday 16 February and will urge businesses to sign up to the Age-friendly Belfast Charter which sets principles and standards to help older people live life to the full.

Lord Mayor, Arder Carson, who will welcome guests to the event said: “Our population is getting older, people are living longer and they want services tailored to their needs, services which welcome them and where they are not seen as an afterthought or inconvenience.

“Small changes in local companies can make a difference to the daily experience of an older person. This breakfast is aimed at helping business consider those changes.”

The Age-friendly Belfast Charter Breakfast is being organised under the auspices of the Belfast Strategic Partnership, a partnership working together to address inequalities in Belfast. More information is available from our website

Iain Deboys, Chair of the Healthy Ageing Strategic Partnership said: “I would encourage business to come along and hear about our Age-friendly Charter.

“Signing up to the principles will help businesses to improve customer care and retain the skills of older employees. Older people tend to be loyal customers. An age-friendly business can attract and keep customers within a large and expanding demographic.”

Nigel Grimshaw, the council’s Director of City and Neighbourhood Services, will look at how being Age-friendly fits into ‘The Belfast Agenda’. This is a vision for Belfast 2030, created in partnership with key city partners, residents and community organisations.

The plan sets out measurable medium and long term goals for social, economic and environmental improvements for Belfast over the next 15 years.

Among other topics being addressed is dementia awareness training and the experiences of business and charities who have already signed up to the Age-friendly Belfast Charter.
