Lidl and Tesco increase supermarket share in NI
Lidl is once again slowly growing its share of the Northern Ireland grocery market, new figures show.
The German supermarket giant, which has 38 stores here, increased its share from 5.4% to 5.8% in the 12 months to the middle of July, according to Kantar Worldpanel.
Meanwhile, Northern Ireland’s largest supermarket Tesco has increased its dominance, upping its share of the grocery market from 34.5% to 35%. It has around 50 stores here.
Sainsbury’s and Asda saw a small decrease in their market shares, while other multiples witnessed a decline from 9.3% to 8.6% during the same period.
In the Republic the latest grocery market share figures show that the market continues to grow despite deepening price deflation.
The value of the grocery market rose by 2% during the past quarter compared to last year, with the sector worth €2.34bn (£2.09bn) over the 12 weeks – up €45m (£40m) on last year.
Cora Campbell of Kantar Worldpanel said: “Despite a decline in the average price per pack, the market has continued to grow.
“In response to lower prices, shoppers have been putting more items into their baskets, which has kept market performance on an upward trajectory.”
